Paul Holmes works in video, audio, stills photography and light, to study the gestures and actions of the human body. This work captures the roaming inhabitants of the Indian city of Kolkata, and its relentless streams of traffic, and creates a shadowplay. These drifting men and women, and the city’s taxis, buses and auto-rickshaws, are briefly caught in street lights in the southern district of Ballygunge Phari. They are little more than fleeting shapes, projected in silhouette for a moment onto a window, before melting away into the darkness. No sooner are they gone than more appear to haunt the screen. Innumerable, anonymous imprints of the teeming metropolis, constantly on the move, repeatedly fading away and flickering back to life. Grateful thanks to Kwality restaurant, Ballygunge, Kolkata, where the piece was filmed.
