I've recently been painting the birds that come into my garden as a way of documenting the everyday, common birds we often take for granted.
When I saw this image, albeit taken at zoo am Meer, Bremerhaven in 2006 by HeJa, I was inspired to paint it because I know that resident and migrating seabirds in Europe have been facing an uncertain future due to disease decimating colonies.
Captive birds like this one and breeding programmes offer hope that humans can help to avert disaster and keep these birds on the "everyday" list.
