In Greek mythology, Sirens were beautiful creatures with powerful, hypnotic voices that frequently lured sea farers to premature death in dangerous waters with their irresistible song. Sirens are female humanlike beings with bewitching voices. Sirens were not mortal women, they represent the ideal of feminine allure.
The siren here is surrounded sound-producing shells, and images of the wind like echoes of sea song. Those who hear the siren song must resist the temptation to sink into the past. She mimics the pose of Botticelli’s Venus borne to land by the winds in a massive scallop shell.
