R.L.Stevenson spent his childhood on the Isle of Erraid off SW Mull and the shore Station for Dubh Artach lighthouse, 18 miles away, linked only by the ferocious Torran rocks, described terrifyingly in The Merry Men’ as ship wreckers,
‘but when it is calm…there appear certain strange, undecipherable marks—sea-runes, as we may name them—on the glassy surface of the bay’
In ‘Sea-Runes’ Faithfull depicts the nearby Treshnish Isles, historically a base for Viking raiders. Originally drawn in locally sourced oak-gall ink, smudged accidentally by bracken and smeared by sea water spray on the dinghy journey back to Mull.
