Whilst exploring the possibilities of abstraction to convey an idea, my art-making is an iterative process of discovery: where colour, mark-making, texture and shape create a visual record of memory, an impression of place, an event or emotion. Applying and erasing layers of paint, paper, pastel and charcoal leave traces of marks, allows images to emerge and the painting develop over time. Ocean from Desert Dawn chart a significant aspect of a journey through the Sahara Desert: inspired by my passion for navigating journeys, using nautical charts, maps and travelogues, that in-turn provoke curiosity and deeper research into place, people, their history and mythologies.
