Titled ‘Spido’, or ‘40%’, the artwork featured here comes from Cass’s series ‘Rising Horizon’. Works from this set are often named for the height the painted sea reaches upon the surface’s face. Here, the support is a 1950s steel advertisement for Spido motor-oil. So chosen for sea-rise is occurring as a result of warming and expanding sea-water – heated in part by emissions from transportation, trapped in the atmosphere, inhibiting the Earth’s natural cooling process. We are, quite literally, driving sea levels upward.
