This piece was made during a residency at the WASPS Booth in Shetland. The Booth sits out into the sea, so on three sides of my living and working space I was surrounded by water. Its constant movement and ever changing surface and the refraction of light contrasted with my sense of standing still in one spot, and my feelings of slowing down and taking notice reminded me of the impermanence of my existence and that we are merely here to bear witness.

The work was a direct drawing with white ink onto black card and tracing paper, the layering made in response to the depths of vision that looking across moving water affords. I wanted to capture the ceaseless motion in the multitude of marks, as well as reflecting on the wear and tear of humanity's actions on the environment, ie the discarding of plastic, paper etc into the sea.
