This picture depicts my mother and father sitting together. My Father passed away in 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. My Mother cared for him and was completely exhausted and grief stricken after he died. She had lost the art of conversation. I have visited every day during the pandemic and she has gradually begun to talk; Stories of the old days. Stories I remember as a child. My Father was conscripted to the Air Force and left for his basic training on 02/02/1952, the same day that George VI died. The streets were in darkness, shops all closed and my mum went with him to the train station. He said to her “Don’t cry, it’s not for long, and all the lights will be back on”, typical of Dad to pretend that the tribute was for him. It is uplifting to hear the old stories again and to see my mum remembering their life together, instead of his illness, one positive to have come out of these strange times when we feared for her. In the picture he is sitting where he always sat. She never sat beside him, but it feels like she is with him now. The man he was.
