Sarah Kudirka
This work is priced unframed.
This diptych fits into Kudirka’s series of concentrated oil sketches painted over instant film – here using Instax of different formats passed on to her as ‘fails’ by two different photographers to use as substrata. Full of energy and made using large luxurious brushstrokes and rich colours, the artist has paired them as a diptych of unequal-sized paintings. The artist regards these abstract images literally, as colours over and next to others on a field of limiting dimensions. The content and composition of the underlying photographic image is disregarded as soon as she begins painting over it. (NB The taker of the original shots agrees to relinquish their copyright to Kudirka as soon as their exposures are given to her to work over). She chooses that a gorgeous magenta can sit beside a rich orange, over an opaque blue grey and remain simply colours next to others with no recourse to photographic content. For Kudirka the instant film exposure is used purely as a surface over which to apply paint layers and scratch, wipe or scape back. She sometimes chooses to make enlargement prints from this series of work on small instantfilm surfaces, this diptych has not be used for prints and remains a unique pairing of originals.
