I made this work as a response to the teenage experience of lockdown. My own step daughter is a thirteen year old S2 student at James Gillespies High School. The head teacher there told me there are 126 boys in S2, so I made 126 plaster and clay vials all graffiti'd with emotions from lockdown or simply stamped with a Z. The crocheted yarn cord is a theme throughout my recent work, representing motherhood. The yarn cord joins the 126 vials together in this piece; as parents we want to allow our young people freedoms but we also want to protect them with that strong pull of maternal love. The covid restrictions and lockdowns of this last year have certainly amplified the push-pull relationships between young people and their carers. Wanting to protect them from a deadly virus, but also wanting them to have the freedoms all teenagers should enjoy.
