Iona Brown
Through my practice I select mediums and techniques of a contrasting nature to portray both beauty and brutality. With a conscious level of gentleness, I expose fragility to all manner of destruction. The contrast of luxury and desire is met with aggression and discomfort, trapping an onlooker in a conflict of shock and awe. The piece is visually desirable, delicate, sharp, aggressive, weighty, dominant yet subdued. I focus on birds and their symbolic power as ornaments of desire. This piece was inspired by a particular interest I hold in the nature of the down feather industry and specifically live-plucking. Furthermore, making connections between the female form and and suffering of birds. Using bronze I expose the complex relationship humans establish with desire and ethics. In doing so, I create objects of unworldly desire, desire which is controlled by uncertainty. Encapsulating fragments of nature in a space between comfort and vulnerability, which once may feel uncomfortable to witness.
