Sally Rickett
This piece is an interpretation of a previous portrait of 'Holly'. The process of making a portrait gives me an in depth knowledge of an individuals head; and I seem to retain that knowledge. Subsequently I often rework a portrait many times with different interpretations exploring different aspects of form , texture and character, often not referring to the original head but working from senses and memory. As a consequence the subsequent work are often with more loose and free in interpretation. This work is a small hand held piece, made by holding the evolving clay in one hand, and sculpting with the other which provides a very strong connection with the both the clay and the making process. The finished piece sits comfortably in the palm, and so arguably achieves a greater degree of intimacy, connection and is tactile appreciation. The piece is also stable and freestanding as seen from the photographs.
