HiddenJapanese woodblock print
51 x 40 x 2 cmEdition of 10
This work is priced unframed. The Poplar Hawkmoth is common throughout the British Isles and is one of the largest of the British moths with a wing length of 4cm. The moth blends in with its background - the light and dark areas in shades of soft grey to black on the moth’s wings break up its outline and the complex pattern of the lichen in pale grey-green in the background help the moth to stay virtually unseen during daylight hours, hence the title ‘Hidden’. The only hints of strong colour are the crimson spots on the underwings which when displayed act as a warning to potential predators. The Japanese woodblock technique is well suited to portray the subtle shading and varying textures in the moth and its background. The artwork is a watercolour medium Japanese woodblock print (34 x 23 cm print size) of a Poplar Hawkmoth on a background of a lichen covered tree trunk. It is printed on hand-made Japanese paper (Shinhosho) in an edition of 10.
