Into the Blue celebrates the oceanic colours and textures of Scotland's far north west.

Lines of thread are stitched and collaged onto a section of nautical chart for the sea area from Skerryvore to St Kilda, including the Sea of the Hebrides.  The threads start with the sandy beach colours of nearby Coll, Tiree and the Western Isles. They merge into the vibrant turquoises that seawater becomes as tides wash over sand, before fading to a darker horizon above. The spaces of the chart left open echo the immensity of our oceans.

Names for hues of blue are collaged beneath the threads, exploring how we describe Scottish seas, as northern light and our weather change the appearance of the waters around us. Collaged tracing paper gives subtle texture, alluding to the tops of the waves as they lap towards shore.

The piece acknowledges the diversity of Scotland's coasts and waters by focusing on the beautiful far north west and its islands.  It hints at the role of lighthouses in keeping our waters safe. Scottish heritage is referenced by including the chart for St Kilda, and by a single line of gold thread that alludes to the treasures found on these shores, such as the Lewis chessmen.
