It is printed on Japanese paper in an edition of 10. The Small Phoenix moth is a relatively common moth throughout the British Isles, particularly in the northwest, and is of medium size with a wing length of around 15 mm. It flies at night in late May and early June in Scotland (coming to light traps) and stays hidden amongst vegetation during the day. The print shows a Small Phoenix in shades of russet brown and orange with distinct white lines and cross-bands displayed against a background of bramble branches and leaves. The strong pattern on the moth helps to break up the moth’s outline when hiding in vegetation during daylight hours. The varying textures and graduated shading (bokashi) that can be achieved in the Japanese woodblock technique have been used to achieve a variety of textures in the moth and its background.
