Wind Resistance 1 explores the soundscapes and seascapes documented from a research trip to Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Machine embroidery is influenced from work participating in the Aural Textiles project – a research residency exploring the use of sound as visual influence within textile design. The embroidery is influenced by sound recordings of the wind from the island. This piece merges textile and painting practices, exploring the use of textile mediums and processes in a painterly context. The work itself is a reflection of more sustainable making methods; hand painting with textile binders to reduce water and medium waste over screenprint, and using linen from industry offcuts to repurpose as canvas base.
